Updated Number of Deceased Victims Recovered Following Hurricane Katrina

Recovered Bodies – At this time, state officials, working in conjunction with coroners from local parishes, have recovered 1,096 bodies. This is an increase from 1,095 recovered bodies reported on Dec. 16, 2005.

Victim Identification Center (Carville) Totals:
903 – Total bodies examined at the morgue

561 – Released to Families

167 – Ready to be released; attempting to locate family members

    1 – Identified; not ready for release

174 – Identity unknown (decreased from 197 on 12/16/2005.)

Released Bodies – Last week, LDH reported 535 bodies had been released to families. Today, that number has been updated to 561 released bodies
                       538 – Storm-related deaths (see attachment.)

 23 – Medical examiner cases not storm-related

Demographic Breakdown of the 538 Storm-Related Deaths:
Race: African-American - 278 bodies (52% of total); Asian-Pacific – 2 (1%); Caucasian – 236 bodies (44%); Hispanic – 13 (2%); Native American – 2 (1%).

Gender: 274 males (51%), 264 females (49%).

Parish of Residence: Jefferson – 26, Orleans – 399, Plaquemines – 2, St. Bernard – 101,

St. Tammany – 2, Washington – 1, unknown – 3, out of state – 2, St. John – 1, East Baton Rouge – 1.
