Updated Number of Deceased Victims Recovered Following Hurricane Katrina

Recovered Bodies – At this time, state officials, working in conjunction with coroners from local parishes, have recovered 1,095 bodies. This is an increase from 1,094 recovered bodies reported on Dec. 13, 2005.

Victim Identification Center (Carville) Totals:
902 – Total bodies examined at the morgue

535 – Released to Families

169 – Ready to be released; attempting to locate family members

    1 – Identified; not ready for release

197 – Identity unknown (decreased from 211 on 12/13/2005.)

Released Bodies – On Tuesday, LDH reported 523 bodies had been released to families. Today, that number has been updated to 535 released bodies
                       512 – Storm-related deaths (see attachment.)

 23 – Medical examiner cases not storm-related

Demographic Breakdown of the 512 Storm-Related Deaths:
Race: African-American - 259 bodies (50% of total); Asian-Pacific – 2 (1%); Caucasian – 236 bodies (46%); Hispanic – 13 (2%); Native American – 2 (1%).

Gender: 260 males (51%), 252 females (49%).

Parish of Residence: Jefferson – 26, Orleans – 380, Plaquemines – 2, St. Bernard – 94,

St. Tammany – 2, Washington – 1, unknown – 3, out of state – 2, St. John – 1, East Baton Rouge – 1.
