Updated Number of Deceased Victims Recovered Following Hurricane Katrina

Recovered Bodies – At this time, state officials, working in conjunction with coroners from local parishes, have recovered 1,094 bodies. This is a decrease from the 1,098 recovered bodies reported on Dec. 9, 2005. The number decreased because some bodies at the Victim Identification Center in Carville were inadvertently counted twice in the DMORT database, which altered last week’s count.

Victim Identification Center (Carville) Totals:
901 – Total bodies examined at the morgue

* decreased from 905 last week because some bodies were inadvertently counted twice

523 – Released to Families

165 – Ready to be released; attempting to locate family members

    2 – Identified; not ready for release

211 – Identity unknown (decreased from 247 on 12/9/2005.)

Released Bodies – Last week, LDH reported 511 bodies had been released to families. Today, that number has been updated to 523 released bodies (see attachment.)
                       500 – Storm-related deaths

                       23 – Medical examiner cases not storm-related

Demographic Breakdown of the 500 Storm-Related Deaths:
Race: African-American - 249 bodies (49% of total); Asian-Pacific – 2 (1%); Caucasian – 234 bodies (47%); Hispanic – 13 (2%); Native American – 2 (1%).

Gender: 252 males (51%), 248 females (49%).

Parish of Residence: Jefferson – 26, Orleans – 369, Plaquemines – 2, St. Bernard – 93,

St. Tammany – 2, Washington – 1, unknown – 3, out of state – 2, St. John – 1, East Baton Rouge – 1.
