Updated Number of Deceased Victims Recovered Following Hurricane Katrina
Recovered Bodies – At this time, state officials, working in conjunction with coroners from local parishes, have recovered 1,098 bodies. This is an increase from 1,090 recovered bodies reported on Dec. 1, 2005.
Victim Identification Center (Carville) Totals:
905 – Total bodies examined at the morgue
511 – Released to Families
145 – Ready to be released; attempting to locate family members
2 – Identified; awaiting autopsy
247 – Identity unknown (decreased from 263 on 12/1/2005.)
Released Bodies – Last week, LDH reported 487 bodies had been released to families. Today, that number has been updated to 511 released bodies (see attachment.)
488 – Storm-related deaths
23 – Medical examiner cases not storm-related
Demographic Breakdown of the 488 Storm-Related Deaths:
Race: African-American - 240 bodies (49% of total); Asian-Pacific – 2 (1%); Caucasian – 231 bodies (47%); Hispanic – 13 (2%); Native American – 2 (1%).
Gender: 248 males (51%), 240 females (49%).
Parish of Residence: Jefferson – 25, Orleans – 360, Plaquemines – 2, St. Bernard – 91,
St. Tammany – 2, Washington – 1, unknown – 3, out of state – 2, St. John – 1, East Baton Rouge – 1.
