Updated Number of Deceased Victims Recovered Following Hurricane Katrina

Recovered Bodies – At this time, state officials, working in conjunction with coroners from local parishes, have recovered 1,090 bodies. This is an increase from 1,086 recovered bodies reported on Nov. 28, 2005.

St. Gabriel Morgue Facility Totals:
897 – Total bodies examined at the morgue

487 – Released to Families

145 – Ready to be released; attempting to locate family members

    2 – Identified; awaiting autopsy

263 – Identity unknown

Released Bodies – Last week, LDH reported 435 bodies had been released to families. Today, that number has been updated to 487 released bodies (see attachment.) Seven deaths that were reported last week as medical examiner cases have since been reclassified as storm-related fatalities.
