Updated Number of Deceased Victims Recovered Following Hurricane Katrina

Recovered Bodies – At this time, state officials, working in conjunction with coroners from local parishes, have recovered 1,086 bodies. This is an increase from 1,079 recovered bodies reported on Nov. 18, 2005.

St. Gabriel Morgue Facility Totals:
893 – Total bodies examined at the morgue

435 – Released to Families

186 – Ready to be released; attempting to locate family members

    2 – Identified; awaiting autopsy

270 – Identity unknown

Released Bodies – Last week, LDH reported 416 bodies had been released to families. Today, that number has been updated to 435 released bodies (see attachment.) Seven deaths that were reported last week as medical examiner cases have since been reclassified as storm-related fatalities.

Race: African-American - 203 bodies (48% of total); Asian-Pacific – 2 (1%); Caucasian – 192 bodies (46%); Hispanic – 13 (3%); Native American – 2 (1%), unknown – 4 (1%.)

Gender: 210 males (51%), 206 females (49%).

Parish of Residence: Jefferson – 22 (5%); Orleans – 310 (76%); St. Bernard – 68 (15%); unknown – 6 (1%); East Baton Rouge – 1, Lafayette – 1, St. Tammany – 2,Washington – 1, Plaquemines – 2, St. John – 1, out of state – 2 (3% for all combined.)
