Updated Number of Deceased Victims Recovered Following Hurricane Katrina

Recovered Bodies – At this time, state officials, working in conjunction with coroners from local parishes, have recovered 1,079 bodies. This is an increase from 1,076 recovered bodies reported on Nov. 14, 2005.

St. Gabriel Morgue Facility Totals:
886 – Total bodies examined at the morgue

416 – Released to Families

162 – Ready to be released; attempting to locate family members

    7 – Identified; awaiting autopsy

301 – Identity unknown

Released Bodies – Last week, LDH reported 358 bodies had been released to families. Today, that number has been updated to 416 released bodies (see attachment.)
390 – Storm-related deaths

  26 – Medical examiner cases not storm-related

Demographic Breakdown of the 390 Storm-Related Deaths:
Race: African-American - 192 bodies (49% of total); Asian-Pacific – 2 (1%); Caucasian – 178 bodies (45%); Hispanic – 13 (3%); Native American – 1 (1%), unknown – 4 (1%.)

Gender: 198 males (51%), 192 females (49%).

Parish of Residence: Jefferson – 21 (5%); Orleans – 296 (76%); St. Bernard – 58 (15%); unknown – 7 (2%); East Baton Rouge – 1, Lafayette – 1, St. Tammany – 1,Washington – 1, Plaquemines – 2, St. John – 1, out of state – 1 (2% for all combined.)
