- Updated Number of Deceased Victims Recovered Following Hurricane Katrina

Recovered Bodies – At this time, state officials, working in conjunction with coroners from local parishes, have recovered 1,062 bodies. This is an increase from 1,061 recovered bodies reported on Oct. 25, 2005.

St. Gabriel Morgue Facility Totals:
869 – Total bodies examined at the morgue

197 – Released to Families

672 – Remain at the morgue

Released Bodies – Last week, LDH reported 158 bodies had been released to families. Today, that number has been updated to 197 released bodies.
185 – Storm-related deaths

 12 –  Medical examiner cases not storm-related

Demographic Breakdown of the 185 Storm-Related Deaths (released):
Race: African-American - 86 bodies (46% of total), Caucasian – 91 bodies (49%), Hispanic – 5 (3%), unknown – 3 (2%).

Gender: 92 males (50%), 93 females (50%).

Parish of Residence: 18 (10%), Orleans – 125 (68%), Plaquemines – 2 (1%), St. Bernard – 23 (12%), Washington – 1 (1%), unknown – 15 (8%), out of state – 1 (1%).
