Hurricanes Katrina and Rita caused extensive damage and limited accessibility to the majority of beaches throughout coastal Louisiana, including many of the 13 locations in the Louisiana Beach Monitoring Program. As a result, this year the program will test the water quality at only three beaches -- Grand Isle Beach, Grand Isle State Park and Cypremort Point State Park.
Working in conjunction with staff from the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board, state health officials have removed a “boil water” advisory for one of the last areas of New Orleans that had remained under such as declaration. Boil advisories were issued following Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent of loss of water pressure throughout New Orleans.
Hurricane recovery plans for reestablishing critical health care services after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have been developed for Cameron, Orleans, Jefferson, Plaquemines and St. Bernard parishes.
Dr. Raoult Ratard, state epidemiologist, will discuss the recent meningitis outbreak in Lafayette as well as what efforts are underway to prevent future outbreaks, at a public forum sponsored by the University of Louisiana System this Thursday, May 4.
