The Department of Health and Hospitals today confirmed two more human cases of West Nile virus. There have been four cases of the virus diagnosed this year, three with the most severe form of the disease.
The swim advisory issued for the water at Cypremort Point Beach in St. Mary Parish on July 15 has been lifted. The advisory was issued because high levels of potentially unsafe bacteria were found in the water. However, water samples tested during the past seven days show the water is now acceptable for swimming.
The Department of Health and Hospitals today confirmed two human cases of West Nile virus from Livingston Parish. These are the first cases of West Nile virus for the 2005 season.
The Department of Health and Hospitals learned last week that Louisiana won an appeal with federal health officials on a directive that would have cost the state more than $300 million.
Swimming advisories have been issued for the beach water at Hackberry, Rutherford and Martin beaches, as well as three sections of Holly Beach in Cameron Parish. These advisories are being issued because water samples collected at these locations showed high levels of enteric bacteria, which come from the intestinal tracts of humans and animals. Please note that this is NOT a closure of the beach or facilities at these locations. All areas remain open for boating and land-based activities.
