  Louisiana Officials Launch Family Biopreparedness Campaign

  Baton Rouge—Officials from the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Department of Education and Department of Social Services will gather at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, in the Governor’s Press Room to announce the kickoff of a yearlong initiative to help families learn what they can do during public health emergencies. Along with announcing the insertion of the Family Readiness Guide into every newspaper in the state beginning this Sunday, state officials also will welcome several retail partners who have agreed to assist with getting the 12-page guide into every household in Louisiana by the end of 2004. Copies of the guide will be available.

  Health Department Launches In-Home Care Program

  Baton Rouge — There are now options other than nursing homes for aging citizens who require some assistance. Under a new Medicaid program being offered by the Department of Health and Hospitals, some people with disabilities and elderly people can receive in-home care and services.

  Health Department Releases 2003 West Nile Totals

  Baton Rouge --- State health officials have released West Nile virus case counts from the 2003 season. During the past West Nile season, which began on March 21, 2003, 121 people from 33 parishes were infected with the virus, and seven of those people died from West Nile complications.

  Seniors & People with Disabilities Can Find Relief from Recent Medicare Premiums Increase

  Baton Rouge --- This month, tens of thousands of Louisiana residents must deal with an increase in their monthly premium for Medicare Part-B. The Louisiana's Department of Health and Hospitals has a solution for these senior citizens and people with disabilities who qualify for Medicare. Through the Medicare Savings Programs (MSP), these Louisiana residents can save $799 per year in Medicare premiums alone if they qualify. Nearly 250,000 people in Louisiana are eligible to receive help through MSP, but only half actually participate

  Baton Rouge – Vendors who wish to sell food along parade routes during the upcoming Mardi Gras season first must obtain a permit from the Department of Health and Hospitals - Office of Public Health.

  LaMOMS Reaches One-Year Anniversary

  Baton Rouge --- Adrienne Magendie Zetty is not the stereotypical Medicaid client. She is a full-time college student scheduled to graduate from Louisiana State University in December 2004. Her husband, Tom, is employed full-time as a partner in a small Baton Rouge business. However, when Adrienne became pregnant late in 2002, she learned her private insurance company did not offer prenatal coverage. This left the Zettys with their only option as paying all prenatal care and childbirth expenses out of pocket. Fortunately, they learned about LaMOMS.

  DHH Makes $6 Million Loan to Ascension Water Co.

  Baton Rouge – The Department of Health and Hospitals Office of Public Health has awarded a $6 million loan to Ascension Water Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Baton Rouge Water Works Company. This loan will help to accelerate the company's construction of its water and distribution system that will greatly improve the quality of water available to many residents in Ascension Parish.

  Trauma Task Force Releases Recommendations

  Baton Rouge – For more than half of Louisiana’s trauma victims, appropriate treatment after injury will be at best unorganized and at worst unavailable. Each year, more than a thousand Louisiana residents die from trauma-related death. The Regional Trauma-Patient Care Statewide System Task Force was charged to evaluate the trauma system in Louisiana and develop recommendations for system improvements and integration with Louisiana’s Homeland Security System.

  Baton Rouge – The Department of Health and Hospitals’ Office for Addictive Disorders prepares to submit a request to the federal government for additional money to partner with faith-based organizations for the treatment of alcohol and drug addictions.

  Baton Rouge – In the most recent audit report prepared by the Legislative Auditor, the Department of Health and Hospitals has only one audit finding. The audit reviewed all DHH offices except its facilities (mental hospitals and developmental centers) and the Office of Public Health.
