The Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Program's Epidemiology, Assessment & Evaluation (EAE) Unit collects, links, analyzes, and interprets data related to women, children, and family health.  The EAE Unit provides epidemiologic leadership and support to:

• Monitor health and well-being among Louisiana's women, children, and families
• Guide program planning and evaluation
• Inform health and other public policy initiatives
• Evaluate the effectiveness, accessibility, and quality of health services
• Support public health research
• Translate objective data to inform actions

The EAE Unit is guided by a CDC-assigned Senior MCH Epidemiologist along with staff with expertise in linking complex data systems and general data management and analysis.  Specifically:

• The CDC-assigned Senior MCH Epidemiologist provides overall scientific guidance in the specialized discipline of maternal and child health
• The State Systems Development Initiative (SSDI) Epidemiologist links data from Vital Records, Hospital Discharge, Medicaid, WIC, and other program data in order to provide appropriate datasets to inform programs and policies with answers to complex questions
• The MCH Mortality Surveillance Epidemiologist analyzes mortality data related to infants, children, and mothers in Louisiana to identify prevention opportunities
• The Pregnancy Risk Assessment and Monitoring System (PRAMS) Coordinator and staff who coordinate the PRAMS study operations to better understand the behavior and experiences of women before, during, and shortly after pregnancy
• Fellows, interns, and students

The Unit will soon be growing with the addition of a Maternal, Infant, Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) Data Analyst.

EAE epidemiologists analyze statewide, regional, and local-level data.  Common MCH indicators are analyzed and posted to the website. These public indicators are available for use without the need to obtain further permission. Additional statistical reports based on Vital Records and PRAMS data are available via written request to the unit.
