When to screen: 18, 30, 36, 48, and 60 month well-child visits

The minimum screening periodicity recommended in the Louisiana Developmental Screening Guidelines (LDSG) is based on critical social emotional milestones that occur around these ages. Nearly 1 in 3 children (29%) age 3-17 in Louisiana have a mental, behavioral, developmental or emotional problem – the highest percentage in the nation. Social Emotional screens should be family-centered, meaning that they need to acknowledge that family members are the expert on their child's needs and abilities.

We recommend using one of the two tools listed below to screen for Social Emotional Health. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends screening every well-child visit from birth to age 21 as part of a psychosocial/behavioral assessment. The Louisiana Developmental Screening Guidelines (LDSG) recommends screening at 18, 30, 36, 48, and 60 month well-child visits at minimum.

• Suggestions for When and Where: the initial questionnaire can be handed out by front desk staff and completed in the waiting room. Scoring should be completed in an exam room.
