  East Feliciana Public Health Unit Offers Free Dilated Eye Exams

  Eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts are the leading causes of visual impairment in people older than 65. Hispanics and African Americans are at an increased risk for eye diseases. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults 20-74 years old. And, diabetic patients are 40 percent more likely to develop glaucoma and 60 percent more likely to develop cataracts than those without diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association.

  Recovered Bodies – At this time, state officials, working in conjunction with coroners from local parishes, have recovered 1,074 bodies. This is an increase from 1,070 recovered bodies reported on Nov. 4, 2005.

  Louisiana Reopens All Oyster Beds

  The Department of Health and Hospitals has announced the reopening of the final oyster harvest area that was closed on Tuesday, Aug. 30 because of Hurricane Katrina. This marks the reopening of all oyster harvest areas in Louisiana.

  Louisiana Opens More Oyster Beds

  The Department of Health and Hospitals has announced the reopening of oyster harvest areas that were closed on Tuesday, August 30, 2005 because of Hurricane Katrina. Oyster harvesting can resume in the Harvest Areas 3-4 and in Harvest Areas 8-13.
