Food and Drug Unit
The Food and Drug Unit of the Office of Public Health regulates a variety of activities and processes pertaining to food, drugs, and cosmetics in the state of Louisiana. Regulated facilities include food-manufacturing facilities; drug-manufacturing facilities; food and drug storage warehouses; ice-manufacturing plants; ice-vending units; bottled water facilities; acidified- and low-acid canned foods processors; food banks; breweries; wineries; wholesale producers of value-added seafood products (such as gumbos and etouffees); beef and poultry product storage warehouses; medical-gas manufacturers and trans-fillers; medical-gas distribution facilities; UV tanning facilities; commercial body art (tattooing, permanent makeup, and body piercing) facilities; and water-vending units.

Commercial Body Art

Body art is defined by Part XXVIII of Title 51 of the Louisiana Administrative Code as "the practice of physical body adornment by registered establishments and operators utilizing, but not limited to, the following techniques: tattooing, cosmetic tattooing, body piercing, branding, and scarification".

Product Registration
A Certificate of Registration is distinct and separate from a Permit to Operate. All facilities that fall under the auspices of Part VI, Part X, Part XXVIII, or other Food and Drug regulations must be permitted. Only those facilities which produce a retail-packaged food, drug, or cosmetic commodity are required to register such commodities with FDU. Drug Manufacturing and Distribution
This page contains information regarding regulation of drug manufacturing and distribution by the Food and Drug Unit. If you wish to operate a drug-manufacturing facility in the state of Louisiana, you must obtain a Permit to Operate and a Certificate of Registration from the FDU. In addition, you must register your firm with the federal Food and Drug Administration and obtain pre-market approval for any new drug products you will be producing.
