A team from the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has been selected to attend the National Governor’s Association Policy Academy on Chronic Disease Prevention and Management. Only six other states were selected to send teams to this event.
Sen. Willie Mount announced today that the Southwest Louisiana Health Care Consortium (Region 5) will convene its first meeting on Thursday, Oct. 14. Forty members have been chosen for this consortium, which services a five-parish region in southwest Louisiana (Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron and Jefferson Davis parishes.)

Sen. Bob Kostelka announced today the Northeast Legislative Delegation has chosen its consortium members. Forty-five members have been chosen for this group, which services a 12-parish region (Caldwell, Union, Madison, Tensas, Franklin, Jackson, Morehouse, West Carroll, East Carroll, Lincoln, Ouachita and Richland) in northeast Louisiana.
Nearly every two hours, another youth in this country dies from suicide. And for every completed suicide, there are another 100 to 200 non-fatal attempts. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents in Louisiana. Most startling is the fact that more people kill themselves than are killed by others.
The Department of Health and Hospitals has detected 15 more cases of West Nile virus, bringing the total number of cases in Louisiana to 55. Nine of the new cases were from the Caddo/Bossier parishes area, which had the majority of cases during last year’s outbreak.
